Description

As befits someone of her global stature, Diana Ross has never lacked literary attention. She has recorded her own ups and downs and has been the subject of various, and variable, biographies. Diana, Queen of Motown is a different Diana Ross book. It's written by one of the people for whom she does what she does-a fan like so many, with his own personal reasons to be grateful for her talent, her artistry and her ability to take an audience to another place. And that's what makes this book special. It concentrates not on her private life, or reams of speculation and psycho-signifying, but on her work-her music, her movies, her live performances.-her 'supreme' achievements through five decades of consummate professionalism and unrivalled worldwide popularity. There will never be another Diana Ross. Now's the time to celebrate and appreciate the one we've got-the one and only Queen of Motown.

As a fan of Mozart and Motown I have oftened wondered when there would be a book dedicated to the complete works of Diana Ross, prepared in the same manner that has been used in numbering Mozart's work. This book comes close to meeting that goal. Mr. Phillips' work is unique in that the focus of the book is a discussion of Diana's earliest recordings in the early 60's through those released in the 21st Century. The tone of the book seems like Ian is sitting down with you and sharing a cup of coffee, or perhaps tea for those in the U.K. Although a very loyal fan, he maintains objectivity about some works he doesn't prefer but never in a critical manner. He also documents Diana's films and discusses her numerous television specials and one wanders why most of these are still not available on DVD. His research is to be commended in the section of wonderful US and UK discographies, which provide ranks in every genre possible including, Pop; R&B, Adult Contemporary,Jazz,Soundtracks,Christmas and even Classical. Few recording artists can have the crossover appeal that Diana Ross has had throughout her career and as the most loyal fans know there are still many unreleased recordings. As was the case when Mozart's works were being researched here there are some omissions such as the singles released as The Primettes and as The Supremes on the Tamla Label, before the Supremes became the Supremes on the Motown Label. Likewise there is no mention of Diana's "Making Spirits Bright," a Hallmark Christmas CD with the King's Singers and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Some of these works are mentioned in the album reviews which discuss singles as well as what was happening in Diana's life at that time; with few flaws-Diana has five siblings, Mary Wilson is an alto. There also appears to be an omission of the "Someday We'll Be Together" single by name, but the chart ranks are listed in the discography. This book would make a great gift for long time fans and those who have just discovered the legacy of work of Miss Ross. A must buy for collectors.
